- Maintaining Pond Water Quality
-
|
Make sure you pond has salt in the water. Salt is essential
for fish health. Koi and goldfish need salt to control their electrolyte
balance. Salt also enhances the natural slime coating on Koi which
fights off fungus and disease. Salt in the water also kills most
parasitic infestations.
Any type of pure salt will work
as long as it is iodine free. Table salt has iodine. You can order
evaporated sea salts and specialty aquatic salts online, or get
it at specialty shops locally.
Salt concentrations are easily
measured with a Salinity Meter. It is important
to pre-dissolve salt prior to addition to the pond or tank to avoid
salt burns of fish. As a reference 1,000 gallons of untreated water
would need 10 lbs. of salt. Salt is typically maintained by Koi
enthusiasts at a concentration of 0.18% (1.8 parts per thousand).
Use 1 lbs. per 100 gallons of pond water under normal conditions.
If the salt level rises above 0.2% you can do a partial water change
and add fresh water to dilute the salt content.
Use 3 lbs. per 100 gallons when
treating for disease. Only go up to 3lbs per 100 gallons in an
isolation tank because a solution of .30 percent salt will kill
your pond plants! Once the effective dose of salt has been reached,
it should be measured and maintained until the disease has passed.
Once the disease has been treated lower the salt level back to 0.18
by doing water changes.

Koi Medic Salinity Meter
|
Simply add dissolved salt to
your pond until you get a salinity reading of 0.18%. Ideally you should introduce the salt in a
bucket of water already dissolved to keep from burning the gills of your fish. The Koi Medic Meter
is a very accurate, easy to use salinity meter. Simply turn on and dip into pond. Within two seconds
the LCD display will display salt content in %.

DEFOAMER
PROTEIN & FOAM
REMOVER |
| Foam is a problem in
many water features. Excess protein in the water leads to bubbles
being formed by splashing water. EasyPro defoamer is a silicone based
product that prevents bubbles from forming. Safe with all types of
fish & plants. Foam also increases the oxygen demand on the pond. |

A 32 ounce bottle treats 2,000 gallons of pond water
with normal water buffering capacity. You should drain off at least 1/3 of your pond water and fill
it with fresh water before you add new up or down additive. If your pond has lost its
buffering capacity you can dump a ton of additive in the pond and
it won't do much at all. By doing a partial water change you add new water with fresh buffering
capacity.

RESTRICTED PLANTS:
Some states have bans on certain pond plants. Check the
USDA Noxious Plants website
prior to purchase. The buyer needs to beware of any regulations
on plants that may be restricted. If your order gets confiscated
by your state agriculture department we cannot be held responsible.
CLIMATE VARIATIONS:
We guarantee our plants will arrive alive and healthy. Pond Plants
grow differently depending on where you live. If you took pond plants
of the same type, and planted them in different parts of the USA,
each plant would grow differently. This is Mother Nature at work.
We cannot guarantee that your climate will support long term growth
as this varies by location. With experience you will find which
pond plants thrive in your
USDA Zone. Join our
Pond, Watergarden
and Plant Forum and ask some questions before you buy
is the best advice we can give you.
SUBSTITUTIONS: We
reserve the right to substitute similar plants of equal or greater
value unless you specifically request otherwise in the remarks section
of your order. This happens almost never though, and if it does
happen it is usually in regard to floating and submerged oxygenation
plants.
