Pond Aerators,
Aeration and Toxic Algae Blooms - In all seriousness, if you have a lot of algae in your pond you are not
doing something right.
There are 2 types pond water.
Aerobic water and Anaerobic water.
GOOD - Aerobic
means "full of oxygen." Aerobic water is healthy water. Algae and other creepy things cannot live in
healthy, oxygen rich water.
BAD - Anaerobic
means "devoid of oxygen." Anaerobic water is sick water. If you have algae in your water, it is
anaerobic, if not already excessively anaerobic.
Toxicity of Algae Blooms - Some
algal blooms called "harmful
algal blooms," are toxic to animals and humans. Anaerobic conditions can cause growth of
bacteria such as
Clostridium Botulinum that produce toxins and deadly botulism bacteria. (see picture to left)
Zones in water with depleted oxygen content are known as “dead zones.” Botulism cannot grow in an
oxygen rich environment. Installing an aerator will infuse your pond with oxygen which will prevent
algae blooms. Does this happen a lot? No it doesn't, but it can. If you buy a new house with a pond
that has been shut down for months and is a green sludge mess you need to proceed with caution and
assume the worst if you are going to clean it up. DO NOT go slopping around in a pond that is a
stink hole mess. It is possible, if the pond water is really nasty, that you can get a serious
infection or Botulism.
Blue-Green Algae
If your pond is a mess, pump out
all of the water, rent or buy a good power washer and wash everything: rocks, gravel, sand,
equipment, etc. Get a 5 gallon pail and pour in a 1 gallon jug of household laundry bleach. Fill the
rest of the pail up with water. Spray the bleach solution over the entire pond with a hand-held
pressure sprayer. Come back in a few hours and fill your pond with water. Run your system for a
couple of hours and then pump out the new water with bleach residue in it. Refill again with fresh
water. Now you have a clean and healthy pond. Always use an agent such as
GreenClean which is a peroxide (oxygen rich) based product that
is fully EPA approved and safe.
Blue-Green Algae - Some species of
cyanobacteria produce
neurotoxins, hepatotoxins, cytotoxins, and endotoxins, making them dangerous to animals and humans.
Several cases of human poisoning have been documented, but a lack of knowledge prevents an accurate
assessment of the risks. If you see blue-green algae in your pond be on the safe side and break down
your pond and clean it. Better yet, prevent blue-green algae from forming in the first place by
using GreenClean as part of your monthly maintenance.
What does an aerator do?
An aeration unit forces air down to the pond bottom and then out of a
diffuser bar, or membrane at a constant flow rate depending on volume of air being pumped.
The released air from the diffuser causes an upward flow of bubbles
which saturates the pond with rich added oxygen, and just as important starts the water moving.
This added oxygen flowing upwards creates a 'turnover' or a 'cycle' of
water that carries beneficial bacteria from the top of the pond down deep to eat up wastes.
Equally important it forces dead water (stratified water with no fresh
oxygen) from the bottom of the pond up to the top of the pond. It is like a big Ferris Wheel that
cycles the water in the pond.
This process creates a cleansing action which keeps materials in
suspension and available for bacteria to dissolve. Without being suspended organic particles will
drop to the pond bottom and form muck. Muck makes your pond dirty.
This is an especially important process in ponds and watergardens
without bottom drains.
The upward cycle keeps your
watergarden cleaner! The upward and circular action discourages dirt in the water from settling
and becoming sediment (sludge) on the bottom of the pond. This action presents the dirt to the pond
skimmer and biofilter many times over to be trapped and eaten by beneficial bacteria rather than
adding to a sludge pile in the ponds bottom. All with a simple aerator? Yes, too good to be true.

* Restricted Pond Plants: Some states have restrictions or bans on pond plants. Contact your local government for a list of restricted plants. The buyer needs to be aware of any regulations on plants that may be restricted.
** Pond Plants grow differently depending on where you live: If you took pond plants of the same species and planted them in different climates each plant would grow differently. This is Mother Nature at work. We guarantee all of our plants will arrive alive and healthy. We cannot guarantee that your specific location will support long term growth. Over time and experience you will find which pond plants thrive in your USDA Zone
*** We reserve the right to substitute with like plants of equal or greater value unless you specifically request otherwise in the remarks section of your order you submit. This happens almost never though, and if it does happen it is usually in regard to floating and submerged oxygenation plants.
