Iris are water plants that grow very well in water or in regular soil near the water. As a bog plant they add color to any pond or stream and help prevent erosion. The iris flower has become a mainstay in all water gardens. Ecological restoration projects use the iris as one of their primary plants to recover the land. They can be direct planted in the earth or potted. The pot should be submerged in water with 1 inch over the top of the planting media. The important thing here is that the soil needs to be like wet mud. The width of the pot should be at least eighteen inches in diameter, for the rhizome needs room to multiply and expand with its offshoots. The soil mixture in the pot is important. Put heavier soil, like clay, in the bottom six inches of the pot. The clay will help support the root system. Fill the remainder of the pot with compact top soil. Plant the rhizome about one and one-half inch beneath the top-soil. Pack firmly.
