converting a pool filter to a pond filter
« on: April 24, 2010, 06:55:09 PM »

i have seen several swimming pool sand filers being sold as pond filters ..
The bio media is sold as both floating and sinking...which one??
are there any fomulas to covert from sand volume to cubic feet of media?
every one says that there media is non cloging...yet 1.2 are sold with an air pump for cleaning the beads..
none of the commercial filters are under our 500.00 limit...but i can get a 19" filter for under 200... 2 cubic feet of media is abou 100.00
sleeping in the dog house for 1 month because i waisted money....priceless

ok i did some digging.. i found a site that sells aqua ultraviolet media
$50.00 a cubic foot  1 cubic foot is 8 ponds...750 sq feet of surface area
1 cubic foot will take care of 1/2 pound of fish food daily..this is how filters should be rated, not by pond size...a pond with out fish needs no filter so why do we base the filters on pond size..
a name brand 24 inch sand filter is less than 400.00 plus 200 for the media
thats alot of filter for 600.00
sand filter    pounds of media       cubic feet of media
16                 8                              1
18                  12                            1.5
21                  16                            2
22                   24                           3
24                   32                            4

I wish I knew what all that meant. I'd like to do something like that.

pool filters are sold by the diameter of the pressure container..16 inch usually being the smallest...a 24 inch wide filter with its adjustable valve is about 44 inches tall..
the aqua ultraviolet media is preseeded with bacteria...
the filters are hard to camoflage if you dont have a waterfall..although that asain gezebo that our french friend made would work verry well..maybe you could paint some big floppy ears on each side, mouth and nose on the front and a hat to cover the valve.....
