Growth Rate for Koi
« on: April 05, 2009, 10:45:27 PM »

To All,

I realize that there are a LOT of variables when it comes to this question (food, water conditions, size of pond, genetics, etc.....) but I was just wondering, what is the best or average growth rate one could expect to get out of a Butterfly or Standard Koi after one year and lets say the next five years.

I have a new 1,200 gallon pond and I am the proud owner of some one year old fish (just from a pond owner thinning out the pond) that I just got.  They are only 3 to 4 inches at best right now.

I got some other Koi from a breeder that she believes are also from last year's hatch and they are much bigger (maybee three times the size)

I was just curious of what is the average growth rate of a Koi? Or, what is considered the expected growth of a Koi in my small 1,200 pond (if I have the best ((sure will try to)) conditions for them)

Thanks for the opinions & info.

If we're talking about the growth of koi from hatched to 1 year, I've seen some 2 or 3 times as big as the others it just depends on alot of the variables you mentioned. If everything in the pond is perfect their will still be different growth rates. Even after five years their will be variable growth rates , they won't be as drastic as the first year or 2 though.

Last years hatch could be the beginning of the season or the end also.

I think they double in size in the first 2 years and then slow down a bit.

There is a koi growth chart at the bottom of this page:

One thing I have noticed on growth rates is that it also depends on where you buy your Koi, if you buy them from a pet store like Petsmart you are getting grade C - D Koi and the grow a lot slower than if you buy them from a site like this one where you get grade A-B Koi... I have one I got from Petsmart and 4 from this site, the ones from this site are double to triple the size of the one from petsmart and that one is 1.5 years older than the rest.... So in short the quality of koi you buy also determines the rate they grow....
